A displasia actínica difusa se desenvolve após a exposição repetida da pele à radiação ultravioleta, geralmente ao longo de décadas, e resulta de danos cumulativos no DNA dentro dos núcleos dos queratinócitos epidérmicos. Caracteriza-se inicialmente por alterações cutâneas difusas sutis, incluindo manchas, eritema, telangiectasia e descamação fina irregular. É visto mais comumente na pele desprotegida do couro cabeludo de homens calvos. Histologicamente há sinais precoces de displasia na epiderme basal. À medida que o dano se acumula, as alterações clínicas tornam-se mais pronunciadas com a formação de discretas queratoses actínicas, das quais pode se desenvolver carcinoma de células escamosas intraepidérmico ou invasivo.

Diffuse actinic dysplasia develops after repeated exposure of skin to ultraviolet radiation, usually over decades, and results from cumulative DNA damage within the nuclei of epidermal keratinocytes. It is characterised initially by subtle diffuse skin changes including mottling, erythema, telangiectasia and irregular fine scaling. It is seen most commonly on the unprotected scalp skin of bald men. Histologically there are early signs of dysplasia in the basal epidermis. As damage accumulates the clinical changes become more pronounced with the formation of discrete actinic keratoses, from which intraepidermal or invasive squamous cell carcinoma may develop.
