Parkinsonism may occur in Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation(NBIA) that refers to disorders characterised by an excessive iron deposition in the brain-especially the basal ganglia. Only two disorders i.e. neuroferritinopathy and aceruloplasminemia are disorders of CNS iron metabolism. In others disorders such as PANK2 related Neurodegeneration-previously called Hallervorden Spatz Syndrome the exact role of iron in causing the degeneration is unclear.
