Parkinsonismo pode ocorrer na neurodegeneração com acúmulo cerebral de ferro (NBIA), que se refere a transtornos caracterizados por uma deposição excessiva de ferro no cérebro - especialmente nos gânglios da base. Apenas dois transtornos, isto é, neuroferritinopatia e aceruloplasminemia, são transtornos do metabolismo do ferro no SNC. Em outros transtornos, como a neurodegeneração relacionada a PANK2 (anteriormente chamada de Síndrome de Hallervorden Spatz), o papel exato do ferro para causar a degeneração não é claro. | |||||||||||||||
