Chronic secondary musculoskeletal pain associated with osteoarthritis is chronic pain that is attributable to the structural changes that characterize this disease of synovial joints and subchondral bone. This diagnosis should be given regardless of whether the exact mechanism of nociception can be determined. The diagnosis of osteoarthritis is based on clinical and/or radiological examination. The degree of structural osteoarthritis observed and the nature and severity of the pain may not be linearly related. The pain may be spontaneous or movement-induced.
