Acute periprocedural myocardial infarction is myocardial infarction (cardiac myonecrosis) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). It is one of the most frequent complications following PCI or CABG. It is characterized by an elevation of cardiac biomarkers, particularly with the implementation of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin, it can be accompanied by new ischemic ECG changes, and visualised by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) or coronary angiography. In the last decades, various definitions of periprocedural myocardial injury and infarction have been proposed, based on different cardiac biomarkers, various thresholds, and the need inclusion of for additional ischemic features.
