When the contents of a nodule are expelled through the bronchial system, a thin-walled cavity is left. While frequently asymptomatic, cough, haemoptysis, and pleuritic pain may occur. Occasionally these may become secondarily infected. Cavities larger than 4 cm in diameter are unlikely to close.
