Hemiballism, characterized by unilateral sudden, violent, flinging, or ballistic high amplitude movements, can occur due to a lesion of the contralateral subthalamic nucelus or immediately surrounding structure during surgery. Can be a complication of sterotactic surgery for Parkinson's disease with onset ranging from within surgery to hours or weeks after the surgical procedure.
