A high-prevalence focus of ALS and PDC has been identified in the Kii peninsula of Japan. Clinical features are similar to the disease noted in Guam. The C9ORF72 expansion was identified in 20% of patients with ALS, a mutation not detected in Guam populations, but other genetic causes have not been identified.
