Diabetic embryopathy is characterised by congenital anomalies or fetal/neonatal complications in an infant that are linked to diabetes in the mother: macrosomia, cardiovascular malformations such as laterality defects (cardiovisceral and atrioventricular discordance), outflow tract anomalies, and anomalies of the endocardial cushion (complete forms of atrioventricular septal defects) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is generally benign and transient, being the more common.
