Envenomation by certain species of octopus, especially the blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa), the bite of which may be fatal: locally there is a painful puncture wound with ischaemia, cyanosis and numbness. Injection of salivary toxins can cause severe systemic toxicity culminating in death, usually from respiratory failure.
