Lipodystrophy in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus is characterised by lipoatrophy of the face, extremities and trunk, together with a double chin, accumulation of fat on the back of the neck (`buffalo hump') and intraabdominal obesity. HIV-associated lipodystrophy is currently the most frequent form of lipodystrophy.
