A congenital cardiovascular malformation in which there is luminal narrowing or hypoplasia (below the lower limit of normal adjusted for body size) of a branch pulmonary artery before the hilar bifurcation involving the right or left pulmonary artery, or both. Additional information: The stenosis or hypoplasia may be isolated or associated with other cardiovascular lesions. Coarctation of a branch pulmonary artery is related to abnormal extension of the arterial duct into a pulmonary arterial branch, more frequently the left branch. This is to be distinguished from narrowing or hypoplasia of the pulmonary trunk (main pulmonary artery).
