Inflammation and demyelination of the spinal cord in association with multiple sclerosis which may be temporally acute, subacute or chronic and anatomically partial or complete. Clinical features include paraplegia, quadriplegia, sensory loss appropriate to the level of the spinal cord involved and sphincter dysfunction. Other neurological features of multiple sclerosis may be present including previous episodes of neurological dysfunction. Diagnosis may be aided by spinal and brain imaging, spinal fluid analysis which may demonstrate a raised protein, lymphocytosis and the presence of oligoclonal bands and the exclusion of other cause of a myelitis.
