Children aged 5 to 19 years (61 to 228 completed months) have obesity if body mass index (BMI)-for-age is above 2 standard deviations of the median (z-score) of the WHO Growth Reference for School-aged Children and Adolescents. In the percentile system this corresponds to above percentile 97.7. The level of obesity should be considered severe when BMI-for-age is above 3 standard deviations. Body mass index (BMI) is calculated as weight (kg) divided by length/height² (m²). At 19 years, 2 standard deviations above the median (z-score) coincide with the adult definition of obesity (BMI of 30 kg/m²).
