Bites inflicted by simuliid flies, small black flies which breed in areas of fast-flowing water and are found in all parts of the world. Several species of black-fly are responsible for transmission of onchocerciasis. Their bites tend to be painful and can render some areas unpleasant to live or work in at certain times of year.
