Refere-se a um grupo de doenças metabólicas induzidas por drogas ou produtos químicos em que uma pessoa tem alto nível de açúcar no sangue, seja porque o pâncreas não produz insulina suficiente ou seja porque as células não respondem à insulina que é produzida. Esse diagnóstico é feito quando há retinopatia diabética não proliferativa moderada sem depósitos de líquido e proteína que se acumulam na mácula do olho ou sob a mácula do olho (uma área central amarela da retina) e faz com que ela fique mais espessa e inchada (edema).
