Dor primária crônica da articulação temporomandibular é definida como dor orofacial crônica na(s) articulação(ões) temporomandibular(es), que ocorre por pelo menos 2 horas por dia, em pelo menos 50% dos dias, durante pelo menos três meses. É caracterizada por sofrimento emocional significativo (ansiedade, raiva/frustração ou humor deprimido) ou incapacidade funcional (interferência nas atividades de vida diária e participação reduzida em papéis sociais) e, em particular, de funções orofaciais como comer, bocejar, falar, etc. A dor crônica da articulação temporomandibular é multifatorial.
