A síndrome diencéfalica é caracterizada por uma série complexa de sinais e sintomas relacionados à disfunção hipotalâmica. Suas principais características são emagrecimento, apesar de uma ingestão calórica normal ou ligeiramente diminuída, e uma aparência alerta. A SD tem sido descrita quase exclusivamente em associação com lesões que ocupam espaço na região do quiasma óptico-hipotalâmico, principalmente astrocitoma pilocítico juvenil.

Its main features are emaciation, despite a normal or slightly diminished calories intake, and an alert appearance. DS has been almost exclusively described in association with space-occupying lesions of the hypothalamic-optic chiasma region, mainly juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma.
