A maioria dos pacientes com SMARD apresenta nos primeiros 3 meses de vida fraqueza respiratória grave e fraqueza muscular progressiva. Outras características incluem retardo de crescimento intrauterino, parto prematuro e deformidades nos pés. A eventração diafragmática pode ser observada. A morte geralmente ocorre por volta dos 12 meses de idade.
