A síndrome de Rett atípica é um transtorno do neurodesenvolvimento em que os pacientes não preenchem os critérios diagnósticos para a síndrome de Rett típica. As subvariantes incluem: tipo convulsivo de início precoce (variante de Hanefeld) com convulsões nos primeiros meses de vida com desenvolvimento subsequente de manifestações de Rett; variante congênita (variante Rolando), a forma mais grave, com início das manifestações clássicas de Rett durante os primeiros três meses de vida; forma frusta, uma variante mais branda com início precoce; forma de regressão na infância tardia com uma regressão mais gradual e de início tardio da linguagem e das habilidades motoras; variante de fala preservada (variante Zappella) com recuperação de algumas habilidades verbais e manuais.
