Encephalopathy which develops one to four months following the start of therapeutic cranial irradiation and is secondary to cerebral oedema and demyelination. The clinical features include somnolence, long term memory impairment, alterations in mental state and seizures. There may also be brainstem involvement with diplopia, nystagmus, dysarthria and ataxia. This form of radiation encephalopathy resolves over several weeks but occasionally may progress to profound encephalopathy and coma.
