Haemoglobin E trait or haemoglobin E heterozygosity is the carrier state for haemoglobin E. Haemoglobin E is a thalassaemic haemoglobinopathy since the mutant beta E chain is synthesised at a reduced rate. Haemoglobin E in E trait constitutes 25-30% of total haemoglobin.
