Inflammation of the spinal cord in association with systemic lupus erythematosis which may be temporally acute, subacute or chronic and anatomically partial or complete. Clinical features include paraplegia, quadriplegia, sensory loss appropriate to the level of the spinal cord involved and sphincter dysfunction. Other neurological and/or systemic features of systemic lupus erythematosis may be present. Diagnosis may be aided by spinal imaging, spinal fluid analysis which may demonstrate a raised protein, lymphocytosis and the presence of oligoclonal bands and serological testing for antibodies associated with systemic lupus erythematosis.
