Volatile inhalant-induced mood disorder with mixed depressive and manic symptoms is characterised by the presence of both depressive and manic symptoms judged to be the direct consequence of volatile inhalant use. The symptoms are not better accounted for by a depressive disorder or a bipolar disorder, as might be the case if the depressive and manic symptoms preceded the onset of volatile inhalant use or if the symptoms persist for a substantial period of time after cessation of volatile inhalant use.
