Tanapox is a very rare zoonotic disease caused by a Tanapoxvirus. It was first seen among individuals in the flood plain of the Tana River in Kenya during two epidemics (1957 and 1962). It presents as acute febrile illness accompanied by localized skin lesions. The skin lesions are either a single or a small number of umbilicated papules or nodules, usually on the lower limbs or trunk. The lesions heal with scarring.
