A repetição automática de vocalizações, palavras ou frases proferidas por outra pessoa, que pode ser imediata ou retardada (p. ex., repetição de frases ouvidas anteriormente na televisão), sem função significativa de comunicação. A ecolalia é uma característica comum de anormalidades de comunicação no transtorno do espectro autista, mas também pode ocorrer em outros transtornos mentais, comportamentais ou de neurodesenvolvimento e em algumas condições neurológicas, como em crianças com deficiência visual grave e, ocasionalmente, em crianças em desenvolvimento típico. A ecolalia não inclui a repetição que ocorre normalmente como uma característica da aquisição da linguagem durante o desenvolvimento na primeira infância. | |||
