Uma fratura verdadeira da coluna vertebral é muito rara devido a traumatismo de parto. Uma fratura geralmente ocorre na região cervical e ocorre após um parto vaginal pélvico difícil. Luxação refere-se ao deslocamento de uma das vértebras cervicais em relação a outra na coluna cervical. O traumatismo permite que uma vértebra mude sua posição sobre a vértebra abaixo.
