Insuficiência placentária é definida como a incapacidade da placenta de fornecer um suprimento suficiente de oxigênio e nutrientes para o feto, e portanto, é incapaz de manter o crescimento do bebê em desenvolvimento até o termo. A insuficiência placentária pode resultar em crescimento intrauterino restrito (CIUR), pré-eclâmpsia, descolamento prematuro da placenta, ou trabalho de parto prematuro e parto. Uma placenta pequena é definida como uma placenta que pesa menos que o limite inferior da normalidade para o período gestacional.
