Amelogênese imperfeita se apresenta com uma rara formação anormal do esmalte ou camada externa da coroa dos dentes. A amelogênese imperfeita é devida ao mau funcionamento das proteínas do esmalte: ameloblastina, esmalteina, tuftelina e amelogenina. Pessoas com amelogênese imperfeita têm dentes com alteração de cor: amarelo, marrom ou cinza; este transtorno pode afetar qualquer número de dentes de ambas as dentições. Os dentes apresentam risco maior de cáries dentárias e são hipersensíveis a mudanças de temperatura, bem como a desgaste rápido, acúmulo excessivo de cálculo e hiperplasia gengival. | |||

Amelogenesis imperfecta is due to the malfunction of the proteins in the enamel: ameloblastin, enamelin, tuftelin and amelogenin. People afflicted with amelogenesis imperfecta have teeth with abnormal colour: yellow, brown or grey; this disorder can afflict any number of teeth of both dentitions. The teeth have a higher risk for dental cavities and are hypersensitive to temperature changes as well as rapid attrition, excessive calculus deposition, and gingival hyperplasia. | |||
