Um transtorno moderado do desenvolvimento intelectual é uma condição que se origina durante o período do desenvolvimento, caracterizada por funcionamento intelectual e comportamento adaptativo significativamente abaixo da média, aproximadamente três a quatro desvios padrões abaixo da média (aproximadamente no percentil 0,003 - 0,1), baseado em testes adequadamente normatizados, padronizados, administrados individualmente ou em indicadores comportamentais semelhantes, quando testagem padronizada não está disponível. A linguagem e a capacidade para aquisição de habilidades acadêmicas das pessoas afetadas por um transtorno moderado do desenvolvimento intelectual variam, mas geralmente estão limitadas a habilidades básicas. Alguns podem dominar atividades básicas de autocuidado, domésticas e práticas.
