Piromania é caracterizada por uma falha recorrente em controlar fortes impulsos para provocar incêndios, resultando em vários atos ou tentativas de atear fogo a propriedades ou outros objetos, na ausência de um motivo aparente (p. ex., ganho monetário, vingança, sabotagem, manifestação política, atrair atenção ou reconhecimento). Há uma sensação crescente de tensão ou excitação afetiva antes das ocasiões em que o indivíduo ateia fogo, fascinação ou preocupação persistentes com fogo e estímulos relacionados (p. ex., assistir a incêndios, produzir incêndios, fascinação com equipamentos de combate a incêndios) e uma sensação de prazer, excitação, alívio ou gratificação durante e imediatamente após o ato de atear fogo, testemunhar seus efeitos ou participar de suas consequências. Pyromania is characterised by a recurrent failure to control strong impulses to set fires, resulting in multiple acts of, or attempts at, setting fire to property or other objects, in the absence of an apparent motive (e.g., monetary gain, revenge, sabotage, political statement, attracting attention or recognition). There is an increasing sense of tension or affective arousal prior to instances of fire setting, persistent fascination or preoccupation with fire and related stimuli (e.g., watching fires, building fires, fascination with firefighting equipment), and a sense of pleasure, excitement, relief or gratification during, and immediately after the act of setting the fire, witnessing its effects, or participating in its aftermath.
