Os principais efeitos adversos associados à ingestão crônica de flúor em excesso são o fluorose esquelética e do esmalte do dente. A fluorose do esmalte é um efeito dose-resposta causado pela ingestão de flúor durante o desenvolvimento pré-eruptivo dos dentes. O desenvolvimento da fluorose esquelética e sua gravidade estão diretamente relacionados ao nível e à duração da exposição. Os sinais clínicos em estágios avançados podem incluir calcificação dos ligamentos relacionada à dose, osteosclerose, exostoses, possivelmente osteoporose de ossos longos, perda muscular e defeitos neurológicos devido à hipercalcificação das vértebras.

The primary adverse effects associated with chronic, excess fluoride intake are enamel and skeletal fluorosis. Enamel fluorosis is a dose-response effect caused by fluoride intake during the pre-eruptive development of teeth. The development of skeletal fluorosis and its severity is directly related to the level and duration of exposure. The clinical signs in advanced stages may include dose-related calcification of ligaments, osteosclerosis, exostoses, possibly osteoporosis of long bones, muscle wasting and neurological defects due to hypercalcification of vertebrae.
