Carcinoma de células escamosas originando-se do esôfago. Pode estar associado a uma longa história de abuso de tabaco e álcool e é extremamente raro antes dos 30 anos de idade. A idade média é de cerca de 65 anos em homens e mulheres, mas a incidência em homens é muito maior do que em mulheres. Está localizado principalmente no terço médio e inferior do esôfago. Grosseiramente, lesões polipoides, ulceradas, semelhantes a placas e ocultas foram descritas. As características microscópicas são as mesmas de outros carcinomas de células escamosas. Qualquer grau de diferenciação pode ocorrer, e a variação dentro de um único tumor é comum. O prognóstico é ruim.

A squamous cell carcinoma arising from the esophagus. It can be associated with a long history of tobacco and alcohol abuse and is exceedingly rare before the age of 30. The median age is around 65 in both males and females, but the incidence in males is much higher than in females. It is located mostly in the middle and lower third of the esophagus. Grossly, polypoid, ulcerated, plaque-like and occult lesions have been described. The microscopic features are the same as in other squamous cell carcinomas. Any degree of differentiation may occur, and variation within a single tumour is common. The prognosis is poor.
