Esse fenômeno, também denominado reação de "downgrading", ocorre na hanseníase boderline e está associado a uma diminuição da imunidade mediada por células, com uma mudança em direção à forma final lepromatosa do espectro clínico.
Doença causada por infecção pelo Mycobacterium leprae. Esta doença comumente se apresenta com um longo período assintomático seguido por lesões granulomatosas da pele, trato respiratório e nervos periféricos. A transmissão é comumente por transmissão de gotículas. A confirmação se dá pela identificação do Mycobacterium leprae com biópsia de pele.

This phenomenon, also named downgrading reaction, occurs in borderline leprosy states and is associated with a decrease in cell-mediated immunity with a shift towards the lepromatous end of the clinical spectrum.
