A condition caused by an infection with the gram-negative bacteria Haemophilus influenzae that leads to a severe systemic inflammatory response. This condition commonly presents with fever, tachycardia, and hypotension. Transmission is by inhalation of infected respiratory secretions or direct contact. Confirmation is by identification of Haemophilus influenzae or its antigen in blood or other infected body fluid.
