Several blister species (e.g. Lytta vesicatoria, Thelyphassa lineata) contain vesicant fluids including cantharidin which can produce skin irritation and blistering. This usually causes harm only when the beetle is crushed against the skin. Weals form rapidly and are followed by blisters after 12 to 24 hours.
