Mariposas e borboletas adultas raramente causam reações cutâneas, mas suas lagartas podem causar lesão pormeio da penetração de suas cerdas (espinhos ou cabelos) na pele. Em algumas famílias (Megalopygidae, Arctiidae e Saturniidae), as cerdas contêm veneno e produzem uma reação tóxica cutânea ou, mais raramente, sistêmica (erucismo). A reação observada depende da espécie e varia de irritação, dor ou queimação imediatas a urticária e edema retardados, anquilose de articulações dos dedos (Premolis spp.) e graves defeitos de coagulação sistêmica (Lonomia spp.)

Adult moths and butterflies rarely cause cutaneous reactions but their caterpillars may cause injury through penetration of their setae (spines or hairs) into the skin. In some families (Megalopygidae, Arctiidae and Saturniidae) these contain venom and produce a toxic cutaneous or, more rarely, systemic reaction (erucism). The reaction seen depends on the species and ranges from immediate irritation, pain or burning to delayed urticaria and oedema, ankylosis of finger joints (Premolis spp.), and severe systemic coagulation defects (Lonomia spp.)
