O contato direto entre carne infectada com a bactéria Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae e a pele humana traumatizada resulta em erisipeloide, que mais comumente se apresenta como uma infecção localizada da pele traumatizada. As lesões afetam mais comumente as mãos, principalmente as regiões interdigitais; no entanto, qualquer área exposta do corpo pode ser afetada. As lesões consistem em placas bem demarcadas, vermelho vivo a púrpura, quentes e sensíveis, com uma superfície lisa e brilhante. Elas deixam uma descoloração acastanhada na pele ao se resolver. Direct contact between meat infected with the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and traumatized human skin results in erysipeloid, which most commonly presents as a localised infection of traumatized skin. Lesions most commonly affect the hands, mainly the webs of the fingers; however, any exposed area of the body may be affected. Lesions consist of well-demarcated, bright red-to-purple, warm, tender plaques with a smooth, shiny surface. They leave a brownish discoloration on the skin when resolving. Sometimes vesicles may be present.
