A irritação causada por esponjas-do-mar ocorre como uma reação mecânica a pequenas espículas liberadas da esponja ou devido a uma reação alérgica à própria esponja. Os sintomas iniciais de picada e ardência podem ser seguidos por prurido intenso, dor em queimação, edema e bolhas.
