An inflammatory disorder of the spinal cord due to infection by a coxsackie group A or B virus. The symptoms and signs are usually acute in onset, and include monoparesis, paraparesis, or quadriplegia, with lower motor neurone signs. Diagnosis may be confirmed by neuroimaging, spinal fluid analysis and culture, PCR assay, and serological tests.
