Psoriasis may appear de novo or worsen considerably in people with uncontrolled HIV infection or AIDS. HIV-associated psoriasis can be clinically confusing because several comorbid skin disorders in patients with HIV can mimic psoriasis. Furthermore, the management of moderate and severe HIV-associated psoriasis is challenging: most conventional systemic treatments are contraindicated but patients typically improve with highly active antiretroviral therapy.
