A disorder in which iron there is deposition of iron in the liver and extrahepatic tissues and which may present in the neonatal period with jaundice and oedema. There is a high mortality from fulminant liver failure. The causes of iron overload may be apparent (e.g. intrauterine blood transfusion for Rhesus haemolytic disease) though a range of mechanisms including poorly understood maternal factors are likely to be involved in neonatal haemochromatosis, the commonest clinical presentation.
