Myelopathy due to konzo often presents with spastic tetra/paraparesis which occurs rather abruptly and is permanent. It is related to the consumption of poorly processed bitter Cassava roots, often among people with low protein diet and who are deficient in sulfur amino acids. The process of Cyanogenesis is thought to be the cause of the pathology. First reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has also been seen in Cameroon, Tanzania, Central African Republic, and Mozambique.
