An uncommon condition which presents as episodic bouts of severe pain, heat and erythema involving the extremities. Exercise and increase in temperature are precipitating factors. The majority of cases are sporadic and associated with a small-fibre neuropathy involving sensory and sympathetic nerves. It presents as episodic bouts of intense burning pain, heat and erythema involving the extremities lasting from a few minutes to several hours. Exercise and increase in temperature are precipitating factors. It is occasionally associated with certain drugs and it may rarely be familial due to a mutation in a protein involved in ion channel function.
