Prolactin excess caused by a variety of disorders (tumours, granuloma, trauma, etc.) which disrupts dopaminergic suppression of lactotroph causing functional hyperprolactinemia. An excess of gonadal steroids (estrogen) and physical stress also enhance prolactin secretion.
