O esgotamento ("burnout") é uma síndrome conceituada como resultante de estresse crônico no ambiente de trabalho que não foi bem manejado. É caracterizada por três dimensões: 1) sensação de falta de energia ou exaustão; 2) aumento da distância mental em relação ao próprio trabalho, ou sentimentos negativos ou cínicos relacionados ao próprio trabalho; e 3) uma sensação de ineficácia e falta de realização. O esgotamento se refere especificamente a fenômenos no contexto de trabalho e não deve ser utilizado na descrição de experiências em outras áreas da vida.

Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and 3) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.
