Prolapso do cordão umbilical ocorre quando o cordão entra na abertura do colo do útero e desce para o canal de parto durante o trabalho de parto antes do bebê sair do útero. O risco de prolapso é alto se o bebê está em posição transversa, se a mãe tiver tido mais que um bebê, se existe um excesso na quantidade de líquido amniótico, se há ruptura pré-termo e pré-parto das membranas ou se as membranas são artificialmente rompidas.
