A epiglotite aguda é um tipo especial de inflamação laríngea, sendo caracterizada por edema local da mucosa da epiglote. A infecção por Haemophilus influenzae do tipo B é considerada um importante fator causal. Particularmente em crianças, a exacerbação rápida da dispneia pode ocorrer poucas horas após o início da doença.

Haemophilus influenzae type B infection is considered an important causative factor. Particularly in children, rapid exacerbation of dyspnoea can occur a couple of hours after the onset of this disease.
