Existem genes tanto dominantes quanto recessivos que podem causar incapacidade leve a profunda. Se uma família tem um gene dominante para surdez, ele persistirá ao longo de gerações porque se manifestará na prole, mesmo que seja herdado de apenas um dos pais. Se uma família teve comprometimento auditivo genético causado por um gene recessivo, nem sempre será aparente, pois terá de ser transmitida à prole a partir de ambos os pais. O comprometimento auditivo é sustentado antes da aquisição da linguagem, que ocorre devido a uma condição congênita.
