A incongruência de gênero na infância é caracterizada por uma marcada incongruência entre o gênero vivenciado de um indivíduo e o sexo que é atribuído a crianças pré-púberes. Inclui um forte desejo de ser de um gênero diferente do sexo atribuído; uma forte aversão por parte da criança a sua anatomia sexual ou características sexuais secundárias antecipadas e/ou um forte desejo pelas características sexuais primárias e/ou secundárias antecipadas que correspondem ao gênero experimentado. Inclui ainda brincadeiras de faz-de-conta ou fantasias, brinquedos, jogos ou atividades e companheiros/as de brincadeira que são típicos do gênero experimentado e não do sexo designado. A incongruência deve ter persistido por cerca de dois (2) anos. O comportamento e as preferências da dissidência de gênero por si só não são suficientes para atribuir o diagnóstico.

Gender incongruence of childhood is characterised by a marked incongruence between an individual’s experienced/expressed gender and the assigned sex in pre-pubertal children. It includes a strong desire to be a different gender than the assigned sex; a strong dislike on the child’s part of his or her sexual anatomy or anticipated secondary sex characteristics and/or a strong desire for the primary and/or anticipated secondary sex characteristics that match the experienced gender; and make-believe or fantasy play, toys, games, or activities and playmates that are typical of the experienced gender rather than the assigned sex. The incongruence must have persisted for about 2 years. Gender variant behaviour and preferences alone are not a basis for assigning the diagnosis.
